There are occasions when an Inspector must check
calculations to fulfill their inspection responsibilities in accordance with
Code. This may involve math concepts that go beyond the substitution of
variables into simple equations.
Trigonometry
and Other Math Concepts Used in ASME Code
Calculations is an online course designed to assist students in learning the
fundamentals of calculating more advanced mathematical concepts. It is
important to understand these fundamental concepts in order to perform or
verify the accuracy of calculations required by industry codes and
standards.
Learning
Outcomes
After completing this course,
students will be able to:
Use
trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions to solve Code-related
equations.
Explain numbers to
powers and Euler's number.
Use logarithms
in Code-related equationsdefine the meaning of key words used in the Code, such as: shall,
will, should, may, can.
Find
the correct value in minimum/maximum functions.
Explain how interpolation is used in Code-related
functions.

Materials
Each student is required to have a
scientific calculator, pencil, and paper.
Additionally, reference is made to ASME Sections I and VIII Div. 1 throughout
the course, however these books are not required to complete this
course
Note: ASME Code and Standards may be
ordered through the ASME Web
site.
Criteria
for Successful Completion
As a minimum, for a National
Board Certificate of Completion to be issued, students must:
