Course Information General Information

Common ASME Code Calculations for the Inservice Inspector presents Inservice Inspectors with calculations likely to be encountered during the course of their work. These calculations are mstly for finding minimum thickness when maximum allowable working pressure is known, or vice versa .

The course begins by reviewing basic math concepts including definitions and order of operations, then moves onto learning general computations required to perform various pressure-retaining item calculations, including a systematic method of problem solving. Students will first learn about calculations for Section VIII Div. 1 pressure vessels, then Section I shell calculations, followed by Section I head calculations. Finally, calculations involing B31.1 piping and Section IV heating boilers are presented.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of ASME Code equations to inservice inspection
  • Understand how equations are presented with their parameters in the Code
  • Understand how to plan, present, and solve a Code equation
  • Perform key calculations concerning:
    • ASME Section VIII pressure vessels
    • ASME Section I boiler tubes, shells, and heads
    • ASME B31.1 power piping
    • ASME Section IV heating boilers

Reference Materials
Each student is required to have the following materials (currently mandated edition):

  • ASME Section I, Power Boilers
  • ASME Section IV, Heating Boilers
  • ASME Section VIII Div. 1, Pressure Vessels
  • ASME B31.1, Power Piping
  • Calculator with a square-root function

Note: All Parts of the NBIC may be ordered through the National Board website.

Criteria for Successful Completion
As a minimum, for a National Board Certificate of Completion to be issued, students must:

  • actively participate in all online course interactions
  • respond to all knowledge check questions
