Course Information General Information

Operation and Installation of Pressure Relief Devices is an online course designed for the inservice inspector, providing knowledge regarding the proper operation and installation of pressure relief devices. The pressure relief device, commonly referred to as PRD, must be capable of venting excess pressure to prevent catastrophic failure due to overpressure condition. As such, it is important for the inservice inspector to have a basic working knowledge of its proper operation and installation.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, students will be able to:  

  • Understand the purpose and operation of pressure relief devices.
  • Describe the types of pressure relief devices and their use.
  • Understand proper installation requirements for pressure relief devices.
  • Describe differences among ASME Code sections for installation of pressure relief devices.
  • Identify proper marking of pressure relief devices to be installed.

Reference Materials
Each student is required to have the following materials (currently mandated edition):

  • ASME Section VIII Div. 1, Pressure Vessels
  • NBIC Part 1, Installation
  • Additional references and requirements are provided from ASME Sections I, IV, and NBIC Part 2 throughout this course, however these materials are not required.

Criteria for Successful Completion
As a minimum, for a National Board Certificate of Completion to be issued, students must:

  • actively participate in all online course interactions
  • respond to all knowledge check questions
