Course Information General Information

Inspection of Pressure Reducing Stations is an  online course  designed to review the ASME Code and NBIC requirements an Inservice Inspector needs to be aware of when inspecting pressure reducing stations, which are commonly found in piping systems associated with boilers and pressure vessels. An understanding of the design and installation rules by those responsible for inspection of these stations is important to ensure the station is safe and meets the applicable Code rules.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, students will be able to:  

  • Describe the function and basic design of a pressure reducing station.
  • Identify the ASME B31.1 and NBIC Part 1 rules governing the design and installation of pressure reducing stations and associated relief piping.
  • Explain when to use and how to determine the size of the required safety relief valve.
  • Recall the contents of B31.1 Nonmandatory Appendix II, Rules for the Design of Safety Valve Installations .

Each student is required to have the following materials (currently mandated edition):

  • NBIC Part 1, Installation
  • ASME B31.1, Power Piping

Criteria for Successful Completion
As a minimum, for a National Board Certificate of Completion to be issued, students must:
