Overview of ASME Section VIII, Division 2, is an online course designed to provide an introduction to vessels fabricated using alternative rules to the traditional "calculation by rule" method found in Section VIII, Division 1. The rules and requirements of Division 2 are discussed, from the concept of the User's Design Specificiation to the completion of the data report and stamping. Students will learn the role of both the User and the Manufacturer in design and fabrication, as well as the Inspector's role in the verification of compliance during construction and testing of Division 2 vessels.

Please Note: This course does not include in-depth discussion of materials, design-by-rule, or design-by-analysis.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, students will be able to:  

  • Explain the difference in design philosophy between Division 1 and 2.
  • Explain the difference between Class 1 and Class II vessels in Section VIII, Division 2.
  • Describe the User Design Specificiation and Manufacturer's Design Report, ad who signs each.
  • List the major duties of the Authorized Inspector for Division 2 vessels.
  • Describe the rules for fabrication and testing of Division 2 vessels.
  • Describe the rules for the reports and stamping of Division 2 vessels.

Criteria for Successful Completion
