Synopsis: This course is designed to provide the Authorized Inspector with knowledge in the area of materials in order to recognize when the Certificate Holders are permitted to take exceptions to materials requirements; use materials with further limitations; or use material meeting more than one specficiation and/or grade. With a concentration on "material for pressure parts," this training deals with current exceptions identified in ASME Section I and VIII, and includes material specifications regarding power piping materials found in ASME B31.1.

Limits and Exceptions for ASME Code Materials, is an online course designed to provide the Authorized Inspector with knowledge in the area of materials in order to recognize when the Certificate Holders are permitted to take exceptions to materials requirements; use materials with further limitations; or use material meeting more than one specficiation and/or grade. With a concentration on "material for pressure parts," this training deals with current exceptions identified in ASME Section I and VIII, and includes material specifications regarding power piping materials found in ASME B31.1.

This training is delivered in a Question and Answer format and includes several real-life scenarios that allow the learner to test their knowledge of the material.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, students will be able to:  

  • State the Authorized Inspector (AI) duties associated with material verification.
  • Identify material with further limitations and use of material meeting more than one specification and/or grade.
  • Recognize Code material exceptions as they relate to:
    • Welding materials
    • ASTM specification materials
    • Non-ASME specification materials
    • Miscellaneous, prefabricated, or preformed standard pressure parts materials
    • ASME specification materials which are not listed as acceptable
    • Materials for non-pressure attachments
    • Code Case materials

  • ASME Section I, Rules for Construction of Power Boilers
  • ASME Section II, Materials
  • ASME Section VIII, Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels
  • ASME Section IX, Qualification Standard for Welding, Brazing, adn Fusing Procedures
  • ASME B31.1, Pressure Piping

Criteria for Successful Completion
