Liquid Penetrant Examination Basics is an online course in which students learn what liquid penetrant (PT) examination is, how it works, and which materials can and cannot be examined using this process. Students are also presented with the requirements found in the ASME BPV Codes of Construction regarding PT examination, including compentency and qualification of personnel, acceptance standards, repair standards, and terminology.

Students are then walked through the detailed steps found in ASME's Section V for performing PT examination: surface pentration, penetrant application,  excell penetrant removal, developer application, interpretation/evaluation of results, and post-examination cleaning. Documentation of examination results and how to ensure your PT site is safe are also reviewed.

After completing this course, students will be able to:  

  • Explain how PT examination works
  • Give examples of materials that can and cannot be examined using liquid penetrants
  • Explain the advantage and disadvantages of PT examination
  • Explain ASME Code of Construction requirements for PT examination
  • List the steps taken to perform PT examination
  • Describe the details of each step as provided in ASME BPV Code Section V

Although not required, each student may find it helpful to have the following materials (currently mandated edition):

  • ASME Section I,  Rules for Construction of Power Boilers
  • ASME Section V,  Nondestructive Examination
  • ASME Section VIII Division 1,  Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels
