Register to Take a National Board Exam


The National Board has partnered with Prometric to administer on-demand computer-based commission and endorsement examinations.

This platform is available for students attending training via our virtual classroom and individuals seeking to re-examine.

The Process
  1. The exam candidate must first complete the prerequisite National Board training course, when applicable. See exam description below for training requirements.
  2. The exam candidate submits their legal name, home address, exam requested, and exam fee to the National Board Training Department by clicking the exam name from the catalog below then completing and submitting the registration form.
  3. The National Board notifies Prometric of an exam candidate's eligibility.
  4. Prometric emails the candidate to schedule the exam on the candidate's requested date and available Prometric location. NOTE: The emails from Prometric will come with "SMT Notice" as the sender.
  5. Exam candidates are required to bring the stated reference materials for the exam (provided in confirmation email once scheduled).
  6. Exam Results: For endorsement exams, results are provided to the exam candidate at the end of the exam; For commission exams, results are provided to the exam candidate by the National Board within one week of the exam.
  7. Upon receipt of exam results, the Training Department will update the candidate's records.

Endorsement Exam: $100 USD
Commission Exam: $170 USD

Cancellation Fees
  • 30 days or more before scheduled test date: No Fee
  • 5 to 29 days before scheduled test date: $35 USD
  • Fewer than 5 days before scheduled test date, no show for scheduled test date: Full Exam Fee

COMMISSION AND ENDORSEMENT EXAMS

Authorized Inspector (AI) Exam

The AI Commission Exam is a 85 question, multiple-choice examination given in two 3-1/2 hour periods: Part 1 in the morning, a lunch break, followed by Part 2 in the afternoon. Students must have attended the National Board Authorized Inspector Commission (AI) Course to be eligible to sit for this examination.

Authorized Inspector Supervisor (B) Exam

The B Endorsement Exam is a 50 question, multiple-choice examination given in a four-hour period. Students must have attended the National Board Inspector Supervisor (B/O) Course to be eligible to sit for this examination.

Authorized Nuclear Inservice Inspector (I) Exam

The I Endorsement Exam is a 50 question, multiple-choice examination given in a four-hour period. Students must have attended the National Board Authorized Nuclear Inservice Inspector (I) Course to be eligible to sit for this examination.

Authorized Nuclear Inspector (N) Exam

The N Endorsement Exam is a 50 question, multiple-choice examination given in a four-hour period. Students must have attended the National Board Authorized Nuclear Inspector (N) Course to be eligible to sit for this examination.

Authorized Nuclear Inspector Concrete (C) Exam

The C Endorsement Exam is a 50 question, multiple-choice examination given in a four-hour period. Students must have attended the National Board Authorized Nuclear Inspector Concrete (C) Course to be eligible to sit for this examination.

Authorized Nuclear Inspector Supervisor (NS) Exam

The NS Endorsement Exam is a 50 question, multiple-choice examination given in a four-hour period. Students must have attended the National Board Authorized Nuclear Inspector Supervisor (NS) Course to be eligible to sit for this examination.

Inservice Inspector (IS) Exam

The IS Commission Exam is a 85 question, multiple-choice examination given in two 3-1/2 hour periods: Part 1 in the morning, a lunch break, followed by Part 2 in the afternoon. There is no training prerequisite for sitting for this examination.

Owner-User Inspector Supervisor (O) Exam

The O Endorsement Exam is a 50 question, multiple-choice examination given in a four-hour period. Students must have attended the National Board Inspector Supervisor (B/O) Course to be eligible to sit for this examination.

Repair Inspector (R) Exam

The R Endorsement Exam is a 50 question, multiple-choice examination given in a four-hour period. Students must have attended the National Board Repair Inspector (R) Course to be eligible to sit for this examination.
